Background

My life has changed dramatically over the course of the last couple of years and it is because of the Read/Write Web or Web 2.0 as some have come to describe it.  We are living during historic times, during an exponential age where we are known as immigrants and our children are the natives.  I come to you today as a husband, father, teacher, and learner and each of these are tightly intergrated within every other aspect of my life.  There is no escape.   Read more...

Blogs

Blog (noun) ~ short for Web Log.  Basically, it is a platform for personal publishing.  It's a place to have your say, a place to join in on the greatest conversation ever held.

Blogger (noun) ~ someone who creates and maintains a blog

Blogging(verb) ~ the process of creating and maintaining a blog

Blogosphere (noun) ~ The totality of blogs; a community or social network of blogs

Story #1 ~ 10 year old girl, Laura, honors her grandfather (25 Days to Make a Difference)

Story #2 ~ Blogger One Contacts Blogger Two (Water Buffalo)

What is a Blog?

"A weblog is a coffee house conversation in text, with references as required ~ Rebecca Blood"

1.  A blog places content in reverse

2.  A blog offers a way for the readers to interact with the author by means of "commenting" or "linking" to other blogs

3.  A blog offers a way for the readers to subscribe to the content via RSS also known as feeds.

4.  Requires no knowledge of HTML

5.  One click publishing

Above all, a blog is not a press release but an informal conversation.

Types of Blogs

Technorati has been tracking the blogosphere, or world of weblogs, since November 2002.  The blogosphere has been doubling in size every 6 months or so. It is over 100 times bigger than it was just 3 years ago.

How Do I Start a Blog?

Determine Your Purpose

  • Personal or Professional

Who is Your Audience?

  • Prospects
  • Current Clients
  • Colleagues
  • Internal

How Much Time are You Willing to Devote to the Conversation?

Choose a Blogging Platform

Consider The 4 P's to Blog Marketing When Posting

1.  Passionate ~  write about ideas that are near and dear to your heart.

2.  Purposeful ~ make sure you keep the end in mind; why are you blogging?

3.  Present ~ keep an eye on what's topical today

4.  Positional ~ Take a stand on an issue and follow it

Seek your own level-with the number of times you post and the time you spend commenting. Some bloggers post four to five times a day, others post once a week. Do what you feel comfortable with-there are really no rules when it comes to the frequency of posting.

Spread the Word

Let others know about your blog

A Blogger's Mantra

  • Lots of Links. Others come to you because you link to them
  • Feature stories about other's postings.
  • Comment more than you post.
  • Be vulnerable and honest. Be interesting.
  • Write regularly. Keep them coming back for more.
